Artist Statement
I create art as an exploration of inner landscapes, resilience, and the interconnectedness of the human experience. Rooted in my background in anthropology and work as an advocate and healer, my work reflects a journey of self-discovery and empowerment. Through my art, I seek to bridge personal history with universal themes, inviting viewers to see reflections of their own stories in my pieces.
My practice is deeply influenced by my roles as a mother, partner, and seeker, drawing from the challenges and beauty of these identities to create work that is both personal and resonant. My art often plays with texture, layering, and movement, echoing the complexities of life and the continuous process of growth. I believe that creativity is not only a form of self-expression, but also a path toward healing and connection, offering a visual language through which we can explore, reflect, and ultimately transform.
Everything you need is already inside you.
Everything you seek is within you.
You are exactly where you need to be in this moment.

With a BA in Anthropology and History from the University of Texas at Austin, Zenna’s journey has been shaped by a rich diversity of roles—yoga instructor, advocate for survivors of sexual assault, technical consultant, and software developer.
In 2021, she made a transformative leap from her tech career to pursue art full-time, partnering with her artist mother to offer online classes in art and creativity.
This shift also marked the beginning of her personal art practice, where she explores themes of womanhood, growth, resilience, and self-expression. Zenna’s work and teachings are deeply inspired by her unique life experiences and commitment to empowering others through creative exploration.
Zenna James lives in Kyle, TX with her husband, three daughters, dog and two cats.
