What’s a Gel Plate? What’s a Monotype?
A monotype is a one-of-a-kind print—unlike traditional printmaking, where multiple identical copies can be made, a monotype results in a single, unique image. It’s often called the most painterly form of printmaking because it combines aspects of painting, drawing, and printmaking into one expressive process.
A gel plate is a soft, flexible surface used to create monotypes without the need for a press. It holds and transfers paint, ink, and texture beautifully. Artists apply color to the plate, add stencils, marks, or objects for texture, then press paper onto the plate to lift the image.
No two prints are the same. Even when you try to repeat a process, something unexpected always happens—that’s part of the magic.
Gel plate printing is intuitive, experimental, and full of surprise—perfect for artists who love process and texture as much as the final image.
